North Star of Chester County

May 2023 Spotlight

Now honoring 30 years serving the community, North Star of Chester County helps working single parent families remain in their homes with a structured program of ongoing financial assistance, guidance through case management, and additional supportive services. Qualified participants receive monthly rental assistance, paid directly to landlords, to keep families stably-housed. Meanwhile, North Star’s case managers work with parents, one-on-one, to complete budget counseling and guide them to become self-sufficient. Reflecting the time necessary to make sustainable life changes, families in North Star’s program may receive up to three years of support– a unique feature among social service providers in Chester County. North Star provides additional supportive services to address the evolving needs of hardworking families including access to an expanded pantry with non-perishable goods, non-SNAP items, as well as personal care and cleaning supplies. They also provide grocery and gas gift cards and financial support for children’s programs including summer camps and extracurricular activities.

To qualify for North Star’s program, a single parent must be working full time and living, with their children, in non-subsidized housing. The United Way describes the families in the program as ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed). ALICE families work but cannot afford life’s necessities including housing, food, childcare, healthcare, and transportation.

Since 1993, North Star has helped hundreds of families stay housed while guiding parents toward financial independence. The goals of the program are two-fold: to prevent homelessness in the short-term, while providing participants with the tools they need to be self-sufficient in the long-term. Successful graduates leave the program proudly able to support their families on their own.
